Prayer, Devotion and living a holy life is just like Housework. You have to do it everyday. Because the dust of this life; the seemingly minute unhappiness, bitterness, tiredness, temptations and worldly pleasures build up over time. And before you know it, your life is in a mess once again. Our lives needs constant cleaning by repentance, surrender and dependence. It needs constant checking for dust with the mirror of God's Word. It needs lots of resources, drawn from God by prayer and petition.
There is no one time you can stop. There is no end in doing it. But overtime, it reaps benefits that are out of this world. Just like how housework keeps one fit and healthy and trains us in discipline.
