Dating vs Courtship

As Christians, our primary purpose in life is to seek and serve God, and fulfill our destiny in Him.

Recreational dating is about self-gratification -- you date to satisfy your own needs.

Courtship is about open and honest exploration of each others lives and families leading up to engagement and marriage.
Courtship is about marriage -- you court in order to see if there is any reason why you shouldn't get married. There is no romantic interaction until after the commitment to marriage.


The primary purpose of marriage is not to please you, but to serve God. (Another way to say this is 'Our pleasure is not God's number one priority!' :) God wants us to be happy, but "happy" is subject to so many variances in circumstances that it is a very poor standard with which to judge life. Genesis says that God created Eve as a helpmeet -- to help Adam perform his duty, working the garden and taking dominion over the earth.

That is God's purpose for marriage -- a team, fulfilling His call together -- pleased with each other, certainly, but primarily focused on Him, not their own pleasure.

Pastor Hill says that love is "choosing what is best for the other person". That's NOT the same as choosing what the other person wants. It's always having the other person's BEST interests in mind. Sometimes, this may mean disciplining them, correcting them, or exhorting them to change. Other times it may be to quash a selfish desire in your heart in favour of their desires. Basically, it means taking the focus off yourself and looking at what you can invest in the other person.
In our contract-happy society, we think of legal contracts -- as soon as one party fails to fulfil their obligations, the other party is free from the commitments of the contract. In covenant, the commitment holds regardless of the performance of the other party.

As I look through Scripture, I’m struck by the fact that the tests God brings into our lives are always “open-book.” We don’t need to cram or study for them, we simply need to open God’s Book and apply it to each situation. The prophet Micah says it plainly: “He has showed you, O man, what is good” (Micah 6:8). God’s instructions for our lives are clearly and lovingly outlined in His Word, and each test is an opportunity to put our faith and allegiance into action.

When we consider our allegiance to the Lord, let me suggest a few questions that might appear on His open-book exam for our lives:

1. Would you still love and serve God, even if He hadn’t made promises to bless and reward you?

In other words, is your love and loyalty to Him based on what He does for you, or is it based on your love for Him whether He ever does anything for you or not? If you open the Book, you’ll see that Job passed the test because he knew that his God was worthy of his worship regardless. As he so boldly announced, “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him” (Job 13:15). Reading about the absolute worthiness of our God in the open Book will help you pass the test.

2. If God required your prized possessions, would you place them on the altar for Him?

Think about it. What’s more important to you, the gifts that God has given you, or the Giver of the gifts? I can’t consider this question without my mind racing to the “open-book” picture of Abraham on top of a mountain with his son, Isaac, ready to offer up what was most precious to him—his son—a gut-wrenching demonstration of God’s absolute supremacy in his life (Hebrews 11:17-19).

3. If He required what brings you pleasure, would you give it up for Him?

I’m not speaking here of illicit pleasures that are outside the boundaries of God’s righteous rules. I mean legitimate pleasures like peace, affluence, and significant friendships. Can you open the Book and say with Paul that you count the best things in your life as rubbish compared to the joy of Jesus in your life?

The apostle Paul seemed to have a good handle on this. For him, walking with Jesus wasn’t about scoring points toward receiving heavenly promises. Life was not about the accumulation of possessions or the pursuit of pleasure. It was about Jesus, and Him alone. Writing to the Philippians, he gave an open-book assessment of his life—a long list of worldly accolades and successes followed by the right answer: “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8).

Now it’s our turn. Regardless of the test you face, open the Book and let Jesus help you ace it!

4) Tried to tempt the Israelites into sinning by practicing immorality and idolatry

Housework and a Holy life

Prayer, Devotion and living a holy life is just like Housework. You have to do it everyday. Because the dust of this life; the seemingly minute unhappiness, bitterness, tiredness, temptations and worldly pleasures build up over time. And before you know it, your life is in a mess once again. Our lives needs constant cleaning by repentance, surrender and dependence. It needs constant checking for dust with the mirror of God's Word. It needs lots of resources, drawn from God by prayer and petition.

There is no one time you can stop. There is no end in doing it. But overtime, it reaps benefits that are out of this world. Just like how housework keeps one fit and healthy and trains us in discipline.

sOmetimes, we worship God with a stagnant spirit, having faith in our own strength, working hard to accumulate things that will not last. We do not seek God and are entrapped by the deceitfulness of this world and worries of life. Even when we practice spiritual disciplines, our motives are wrong as we want to gain the praise of men.
We thus must recognize our desperation and that we are chasing after emptiness. We must live beyond the temporal as our lives are fragile. We can always put our trust in Jesus as He is preeminent in all things.

Response: Put Him first in all things
Make full use of our time
No idolatry
Do not trust in our own strength
Break up our unplowed ground!

Warning to Rich Oppressors

1 Now listen, you rich people,
weep
and
wail because of the misery that is coming upon you.

2 Your wealth has rotted,
and
moths have eaten your clothes.
3 Your gold
and
silver are corroded.
Their corrosion will testify against you
and
eat your flesh like fire.
You have hoarded wealth in the last days.

4 Look!
The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields
are crying out against you.
The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.
5 You have lived on earth in luxury
and
self-indulgence.
You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.
6 You have condemned
and
murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you.


7 Be patient, then, brothers,
until the Lord's coming.


See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop
and
how patient he is for the autumn
and
spring rains.

The Prayer of Faith

21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives and Husbands

22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.


25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. Submit Yourselves to God

1 What causes fights
and
quarrels among you?
Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?

2 You want something but don't get it.

You kill

covet,
but you cannot have what you want.

You quarrel

fight.

You do not have, because you do not ask God.

3 When you ask, you do not receive,
because you ask with wrong motives,
that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God?
Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?[a]

Taming the Tongue

1Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers,
because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

2We all stumble in many ways.

If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.

3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.
4Or take ships as an example.
Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds,
they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body,
but it makes great boasts.

Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
6 The tongue also is a fire,
a world of evil among the parts of the body.
It corrupts the whole person,
sets the whole course of his life on fire,
and is itself set on fire by hell.

7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed
and have been tamed by man,
8but no man can tame the tongue.
It is a restless evil,
full of deadly poison.

Two Kinds of Wisdom

Favoritism Forbidden

1My brothers,
as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ,
don't show favoritism.
2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes,
and
a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in.
3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes
and
say, "Here's a good seat for you,"
but say to the poor man, "You stand there"
or
"Sit on the floor by my feet,"
4 have you not discriminated among yourselves
and
become judges with evil thoughts?
5Listen, my dear brothers:
Has not God chosen those who are poor
in the eyes of the world
to be rich in faith
and
to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
6 But you have insulted the poor.
Is it not the rich who are exploiting you?
Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?
7Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?

8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture,
"Love your neighbor as yourself,"
[a] you are doing right.

9But if you show favoritism, you sin
and
are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.

10 For whoever keeps the whole law
and yet stumbles at just one point
is guilty of breaking all of it.

11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery,"[b]
also said, "Do not murder."[c]
If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12 Speak
and
act as those who are going to be judged by the law

that gives freedom,
13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.
Mercy triumphs over judgment!

Faith and Deeds

14What good is it, my brothers,
if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds?

Can such faith save him?
15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes
and daily food.
16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well;
keep warm
and well fed,"
but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?
17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18 But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds,
and I will show you my faith by what I do.

19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

20You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[d]?
21 Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22 You see that his faith
and
his actions were working together,
and his faith was made complete by what he did.
23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God,
and it was credited to him as righteousness,"[e]
and he was called God's friend.
24 You see that a person is justified by what he does
and not by faith alone.

25In the same way,
was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did
when she gave lodging to the spies
and
sent them off in a different direction?

26As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

a servant of God

2Consider it pure joy,
my brothers,
whenever you face trials of many kinds,

that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.



19My dear brothers, take note of this:
Everyone should be quick to listen,
slow to speak
and
slow to become angry,
20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth
and
the evil that is so prevalent
and
humbly accept the word planted in you,
which can save you.

22Do not merely listen to the word,
and so deceive yourselves.
Do what it says.

23 Anyone who listens to the word
but does not do what it says
is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror
24and,
after looking at himself, goes away
and immediately forgets what he looks like.
25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law
that gives freedom,
and continues to do this,
not forgetting what he has heard,
but doing it—
he will be blessed in what he does.

26If anyone considers himself religious
and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue,
he deceives himself
and
his religion is worthless.
27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure
and
faultless is this:
to look after orphans
and
widows in their distress
and
to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Strange teaching

23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.

Colossians 2:16-23

1 TImothy 4:1-6
1The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
2Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
3They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.
4For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
5because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
6If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.

Hebrews 13

The Changeless Christ

1Let (A)love of the brethren continue.

2Do not neglect to (B)show hospitality to strangers,
for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.

3(D)Remember (E)the prisoners,
as though in prison with them,
and those who are ill-treated,
since you yourselves also are in the body.

4(F)Marriage is to be held in honor among all,
and
the marriage bed is to be undefiled;

adulterers God will judge.

Summary Heb 12

Hebrews 12:1-2
1 Therefore,
since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us

Hebrews 6: 4-8

The warning of this passage is to be not like Esau, who held the things of God lightly. That one sold his birthright as the first born son for temporal gain or satisfaction, then sought repentance with bitter tears, but to no avail. What was his, then given up, was lost forever. Some can taste and feel, see the light of God, and even sit in His presence; they may receive His blessings (partake of the Holy Ghost) and hear His word, and after all that, reject Him. They may for a time appear to be believers, but prove to be superficial.

If a regenerate person were to apostatize - fall away so as to lose his salvation - he cannot be restored. Christ died once for all for all His people - the perfect Lamb, the final sacrifice. He ended the sacrificial offerings in the temple. Now He is building the temple - we are the "lively stones." He has already housed the Holy Ghost in us. To reject His work is worse than to sell the birthright for a mess of pottage. To lose salvation is a sobering, horrifying thought. To be lost to begin with is bad enough, but to gain salvation, then lose it, or reject it, through careless flirtation with the enemy of our soul, is to be lost for eternity. To regain salvation lost, Christ would have to repeat the cost of that salvation: the shameful, painful public execution, and the separation from God. The last must have been the most painful for my Lord! This was the price of my salvation. Do I flirt with the perpetrator of that? God forbid. God has stated here in this epistle that salvation lost cannot be regained. That shame will not be required of Jesus a second time - nor allowed.

In vs. 7-8, we see the common grace shown to all mankind. The earth receives the blessings of the rain which falls on the just and the unjust alike. We all receive blessings from and benefits of the world which God created and placed us in. We are the soil (parable of the sower in Matt. 13:3ff), Jesus is the sower, and the seed is the gospel. While the seed of the gospel is scattered, the tares, the thorns, and briers are also sown by the enemy - and the fowls come to devour the seed. Some of each will grow, and grow to show which it is, and find its reward: blessing or destruction.

We are urged to make our calling and election sure. We must be sure that we are not superficial believers, that we are on the firm foundation - that Rock, Christ Jesus. We must be sure that we are good fruitful branches of that true vine (Jn. 15). May we all be found to be in Him and find comfort knowing that He will not suffer any of His to be lost. He is that Great and Good Shepherd who cares for the sheep of His pasture.
